Osborne Peninsula
About the Nursery
The North Warrandyte Osborne Peninsula Landcare Nursery is a long-established, community-run project dedicated to restoring and strengthening the unique ecosystems of the Osborne Peninsula and surrounding Warrandyte bushland. Entirely volunteer-driven, the nursery brings together local residents who care deeply about the environment and about each other. It is a place where people learn new skills, share knowledge, form friendships, and stay connected to their community while contributing to meaningful on-ground work.
As a not-for-profit initiative, all funds from plant sales are reinvested into growing more indigenous plants, supporting revegetation projects, purchasing materials, and running community workshops. These workshops often focus on nursery skills such as seed collection, propagation, and plant care, helping community members build confidence and take part in caring for our environment.
What We Do
We specialise in growing indigenous plants that are genetically suited to the Osborne Peninsula and the wider Warrandyte area. Our work includes collecting seed from local remnant vegetation, propagating plants from both seed and cuttings, and growing thousands of plants each year for revegetation, habitat restoration, and community planting. We supply plants to private residents, schools, community groups, and environmental projects, ensuring that everything we grow supports the ecological health and biodiversity of our local landscape.
Local Seed & Ethical Growing
All seed is collected ethically from the Osborne Peninsula, Warrandyte State Park, nearby reserves, and established indigenous gardens. This ensures our plants maintain local provenance and continue the genetic lineages that support local wildlife. Our propagation follows natural seasonal rhythms, with volunteers sowing seed, taking cuttings, potting on young plants, and caring for them through each stage of growth.
Projects & Partnerships
The nursery supports a wide range of environmental projects, including revegetation across Warrandyte State Park, restoration of riparian areas along the Birrarung (Yarra River), and the creation and maintenance of wildlife corridors that help native species move safely through the landscape. We work closely with schools, community groups, and residents who want to establish indigenous gardens or contribute to habitat restoration on their own properties.
Caring for Country
We acknowledge the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people as the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we work and recognise their deep and ongoing connection to Country. The Birrarung shapes the ecology of the Osborne Peninsula, and our work is guided by a commitment to caring for this landscape in ways that honour Indigenous knowledge and respect the cultural significance of the river and surrounding Country.
How to Order Plants
Plants can be ordered using our online order form. Once your form is submitted, our volunteer team will review your request, confirm availability, and arrange a suitable collection time, with all pickups made by appointment. We encourage you to start planning early, as different species grow at different rates and some require more time to reach planting size. If you need plants from a specific provenance, we may also need time to collect seed, so the sooner you let us know what you’re looking for, the better we can grow high‑quality plants in the quantities you need.
If you prefer, you can download a PDF version of the order form, fill it out by hand, and scan and email it to nwoplandcare@gmail.com. Please keep in mind that quantities of individual species may be limited, and availability varies depending on the time of year and the natural growing cycle of each plant.
If you’re unsure which species to choose, we recommend referring to the Live Local, Plant Local guide to planting in Nillumbik, which provides excellent descriptions and can help you select plants suited to your property, soil type, and ecological goals. Our volunteers are also happy to offer guidance to help you choose plants that will thrive in your local conditions.
