Getting Involved in protecting our area

There is no obligation to commit to Dunmoochin Landcare, we welcome anyone to come along to our events. Life is busy so volunteering with us means we fit in well with busy. We welcome you when you have the time and energy, even if it’s only coming down for an hour every bit of your involvement helps.

Your involvement with us isn’t just limited to on ground activities!
We are always looking for passionate people to help us in other areas such as event planning, assisting with data monitoring and writing application for grant funding so we can continue to deliver these amazing events as well as the vital on ground works needed to keep our area beautiful.

Key projects of Dunmoochin Landcare

  • Protecting rare and threatened species, such as the Brush-tailed Phascogale (vulnerable in Victoria). This includes erecting nest boxes specific to these animals, conducting surveys (using motion cameras and checking nest boxes).

  • Protecting orchids vital to the area and maintaining a strong diversity of plants species, providing the beauty of our biodiversity for future generations. This can be challenging as it often involves building and placing protective cages to shield them from choughs, rabbits, and hooved animals, constructing wildflower enclosures, planting species that attract pollinators, and weeding to reduce competition.

  • Protecting pockets of bushland with incredible plant diversity on private property through weeding, building wildflower enclosures, and planting species that attract pollinators.

  • Managing noxious weeds, such as Bridal Creeper and Blackberry. This includes brush-cutting, hand-weeding, and, when necessary, employing contractors to spray large patches of blackberry.

  • Community walks to showcase the magical plants, animals, and plant diversity in the area.

  • Movie nights/presentations to showcase environmental issues and management successes.

  • Grant applications to employ contractors to survey and manage ecosystems across the community.

However, as a community, we greatly appreciate the recognition that we live in a fantastic ecosystem. Many of us have pockets of bushland that are magical and worth protecting. We believe it’s essential to protect these areas from destructive activities such as mountain biking tracks and dirt bikes. Without this protection, habitat destruction leads to the loss of the beauty and the very reasons we live in this community—less magical bird calls, fewer colourful and fascinating insects, and a decline in iconic mammals like the Brush-tailed Phascogale. This isn’t just about a reduced experience for you—it affects your neighbours and the broader community as well.

Monitoring in the Mooch

Surveying and fencing are important aspects of conservation. If you don’t survey, it’s easy to miss plants that are still clinging on to the landscape. Fencing is especially critical these days within the Nillumbik area due to the increasing predation from Sambar deer as well as White-winged choughs, rabbits, and, of course, kangaroos during dry periods.

Two examples this year are linked to the Southern Rustyhood Orchid (Pterostylis squamata). A recent survey discovered a Southern Rustyhood orchid flowering near a dam on the Sells Block, and the new enclosure at the Dunmoochin Foundation, along with a protective cage around an individual, has allowed the Southern Rustyhood to flower this year as well by protecting it from predation.

This orchid is rare in the Shire, and it’s exciting to know that it now exists on three properties in the Mooch.
